“Treasure Isle” Was a Florida-Based Game Show

Dear David Inman: It’s driving me crazy trying to remember the name of a daytime game show I watched in the 1960s. It took place outdoors and if the contestants answered correctly, they could paddle out in a raft to a sandy “island” and dig for treasure. What was the name and host of that game show? – R.M., via e-mail

Dear R.M.: To quote the show’s theme song:

It’s Treasure Isle from Florida!
On sunny Palm Beach shores!
You search for treasure on Treasure Isle
Find it – the treasure is yours!

Picture those lyrics sung to a tune by a knockoff of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and you’ve got the opening to “Treasure Isle,” which ran on ABC from 1967-68. The show was hosted by John Bartholomew Tucker and was taped at the Colonnades Beach Hotel in Palm Springs, with Treasure Isle in a lagoon.
Contestants got their chance to paddle out when they fit giant puzzle pieces together.

  1. My wife and I were on the Treasure Island game show during the latter portion of November 1968. We were on our honeymoon and were spectators on the show when we were approached by someone affiliated with the show who asked if we would be contestants. We were thrilled and accepted the offer to appear on the show despite the fact this was a challenge to our time schedule and our budget. We later found out many of the spectators were Canadian and they chose not to be contestants as a result of the severe taxes they would be charged on the gifts they won. When my wife and I competed we became King and Queen of Treasure Island. Gifts we won included a new bedroom set, Gibson refrigerator/freezer, Briggs meat products and something called “Snuffers” which is the only prize we did not recieve. We traded the first prize bedroom set for the second place trip to The King’s Inn & Golf Club in Freeport, Bahamas. I have tried in vain to obtain a copy of the show we were on during the last two weeks of November 1968. I would be grateful to anyone who might have any information on how to obtain a copy of the show my wife and I participated in.

  2. The show was Treasure Island starring John Barthlomew Tucker. It was on ABC in the afternoon. It was taped at a hotel in Florida. I got a real kick out of it. Tucker is still alive. Check him out on Wikipedia.

  3. I am trying to find an episode of this game show with Jim and Carol Bockoven as the contestants. I do not know when they where on, but I do know they were the winners. Can someone please let me know if there is way to get a copy of this show.

    Thank you Lynn Pettenger
